Steps to Improve Poor TV Reception

Most people watch TV to relax and take their mind off the stress. It can be troubling and frustrating to come home to a TV set with poor signal reception after a long tiring day at work.

The trouble with digital television signals cannot always be attributed to one reason. They can be affected by anything. Hence, you must first try to move the antenna’s position or remove any obstructions in the path of it that you think might have caused the issue. If the reception doesn’t improve, you may want to try the below tips.

 Improve Poor TV Reception

Upgrade your aerial

While most people do not pay heed to it and buy low-quality antennas and aerials, it has proven to be essential for good reception. Since the analog takeover, television signals have mainly been split into two frequency bands; VHF (very high frequency) channels and UHF (ultra-high frequency) channels. Hence, most of such problems arise due to frequency incompatibility and broadcast location.

You must make sure that your aerial can receive a digital signal at adequate strength. In certain areas, you might have to use wideband aerial to receive digital terrestrial frequencies. This is because those regions have digital multiplexes that broadcast on a widely split UHF. The older models of TVs used narrower frequencies and hence can have poor reception.

Install a pre-amplifier

If you plan to supply signals to multiple televisions using the same antenna, you must use a signal splitter. Installing it would make the process easier. The main problem that comes with its installation is that divided signals become weak and feeble. To remedy this, you can use a preamplifier to boost the signal. If this doesn’t work as well, you might have to install a distribution amplifier on the antenna side of the splitter.

Check your wiring

More often than not, poor reception is simply the result of loose cables. Hence it becomes imperative that you check all your connections first. Ensure that the coaxial cable is plugged in correctly into the peripherals and the television, and the socket faceplate to ensure it is snug and secure.

Buy a signal booster.

Although it is not recommended to use signal boosters to make the signal more prone to interference, sometimes the situation demands. If you live in an area with weak signal strength, you ought to use a fully screened masthead amplifier. You even get an unscreened model, but it creates more hassles than they’re worth.

Change your supplier

If your service provider isn’t capable of providing you a decent signal, then no matter how elaborate you set up or how advanced the equipment is, it will not improve your situation. Try and talk to your supplier about the issue. If the situation improves well and good, if it doesn’t, consider changing your supplier. But before taking the plunge yet again, consult a specialist and ask for their supplier recommendation. You can contact them and seek advice free of cost.
